Planning around the Great Migration

Choose a region, then give nature time.

Migration is a movement through an ecosystem, not a scheduled performance. Rain and fresh grazing influence the herds; even a well-chosen season does not promise an exact location or a river crossing.

Southern-plains trips commonly focus on January to March. The western corridor is often considered around May and June, while northern Serengeti itineraries commonly target July to October. The boundaries shift and wildlife may be widely dispersed.

Spend several nights in the area you choose. Ask which airstrip, which camp location and how much driving is involved. A central Serengeti camp is not a convenient base for every far-northern day. Resident wildlife should be part of the reason to go, whatever the herds do.
